An example of the commercial style of Gene’s paintings, Originally launched on Iowa’s Spirit Lake, the 75 foot long steamboat Queen was moved to West Okoboji in 1884 amid concerns that Spirit Lake was drying up. For 89 years, she was instrumental in growing tourism for Iowa’s “Great Lakes,” hauling lumber, mail, but primarily people across Okoboji. Today, her heir “Queen II” still offers daily tours around the lake.
